Our first edition of the new year comes on the back of historic stock market losses and financial turmoil around the world, as covid-19 continues to spread. With hundreds of thousands of businesses trying to navigate the economic fallout, restructuring professionals are in high demand. But due to the speed with which the situation is changing, please note this magazine was produced before a pandemic was declared.

Nonetheless, we still have an action-packed edition and bring you the latest two features in our “Worked Out”’ series. First, we turn our attention to Brazil, where a new bankruptcy law has been making its way through the National Congress. While, on the other side of the Atlantic, we take an in-depth look at Ireland, whose lawyers are promoting it as a post-Brexit alternative jurisdiction to London.

Elsewhere, you’ll see another edition of our “Unpacked” features, this time shining a spotlight on Bermuda-incorporated, Singapore-listed Noble Group, which completed its US$3.5 billion multi-jurisdictional restructuring in December 2018.

We also have two new “Heads-Up” interviews, including with Baker McKenzie’s Debra Dandeneau, who discusses the rise of private equity in restructurings.

Finally, in addition to our regular columns and conference coverage, King & Wood Mallesons partner Sam Kinsey shares her key takeaways from INSOL’s latest seminars in China, and lawyers from Harneys highlight the flexibility of the restructuring regimes in the Cayman Islands and Hong Kong.
